Lucerne (Luzern) is a popular tourist destination with its quaint old town, the Kappelbrücke, the lake and the Löwensdenkmal. If you despite all that needed more reason to visit this Swiss city, this might be the moment. From January 6 2022 until January 16 2022, the 3rd annual Light Festival Lucerne takes places in the city. Away with the darkness, and in with the breathtakingly beautiful light installations all over the Lucerne city centre!

About the Light Festival Lucerne

In the dark month of January, the Light Festival Lucerne brings happiness in an otherwise grey and depressing period. During the festival, over 20 light artworks are installed or projected all over the city of Lucern. As most of the light installations are outside, the majority of the festival can be enjoyed entirely free of charge! There are some indoor light shows for which you need to purchase separate tickets.

Always wanted to see an epic light show in a church? Then the project WONDERS in the Church of St. Leodegar is a must-visit during LiLu 2022!

On the website of the festival, you can find a map of the city with the location of each light installation. Here, you also read more about the different artworks and their creators.

The light installations are illuminated daily between 6 PM and 10 PM. As Lucerne is an extremely walkable city, you won’t need public transport to visit the different artworks.

The festival and pandemic restrictions

As mentioned earlier, Light Festival Lucerne is mostly an outdoor event. Thanks to that, the ongoing pandemic only slightly impacts the festival. You do not need a COVID certificate to visit the outdoor parts of the festival. However, for the indoor shows, you need a Swiss COVID certificate proving that you have been vaccinated or recovered from a Covid-19 infection. In one of our previous articles, we shared some handy links on how to obtain a Swiss COVID certificate.

You can buy tickets for the indoor shows on the website of the Light Festival Lucerne. On their website, you can also find all additional information for the festival. Dress properly for the festival, it does get quite chilly in Lucerne in January!
