Sunset Bar Luzern: Drinks, Food & Lake Views

If you know a thing or two about the city of Luzern, you know that views in Luzern are often dominated by mountains and the Vierwaldstättersee lake. With Vierwaldstättersee being close to everything in Luzern, it is no surprise the city has several lakeside bars that are perfect for sunny days and lovely sunset views. Sunset bar in Luzern is one of the bars beloved by both locals and tourists.

A short trip worth taking

As I already spoilered above, Sunset Bar Luzern is an outside bar in Luzern right by Vierwaldstättersee. The bar has amazing views over the lake, the inner city of Luzern, and mountain ranges including Pilatus. A magical view to enjoy while having a drink or a meal!

Luzern is well know as an incredibly compact city, meaning that everything is walkable especially in the central parts of the city. It is important to mention that Sunset Bar Luzern can feel a bit ‘off’ in that regard, but hear me out. The bar is reachable within 10 minutes by bus or bike from the central station. There is a breathtaking lakeside walking path that takes you to the bar in about 45 minutes from the city center. Additionally, there are several hotels close by the bar, so it might be the perfect stop on your way ‘home!’

At Sunset bar Luzern

Immediately when arriving, you understand why Sunset bar is so beloved by both locals and tourists. From the entire ‘garden-like’ venue area, you have an amazing view over the lake and surrounding mountains. if you are lucky and quick enough, you can find a table right by the waterside to enjoy your drinks and food with the best panorama over Vierwaldstättersee. The bar does not take reservations for parties under 10 persons though, so first come, first serve!
Sunset bar only has outdoor seating, which means that in case of rain, the bar is generally closed.

Food and drinks at Sunset bar

The venue has several bars where you can get your refreshments such as soft drinks, beer, wine and cocktails. Sunset Bar has also partnered up with well-known restaurants in Luzern to sell delicious dishes from food stands. Snap up your slice of pizza from La Bestia Pizza (arguably the best pizza in town), get a burger from Wolf burger or try one of the vegetarian options! There need to go hungry while enjoying the summer evening here.

When to visit and opening hours

While Sunset bar has the occasional autumn and winter event, the bar is mostly known as a perfect spot for spring, summer and early autumn. As everything is outside, the bar is only open when the weather permits. Opening hours tend to vary, but generally there are as followed:

Monday – Closed
Tuesday – Friday – 16.00 – 23.00
Saturday/Sunday – 11.30 – 22.30

How to get to Sunset Bar Luzern by bus and on foot

As mentioned earlier, it is easy to make your way to Sunset bar from downtown Luzern.

Bus 24 with destination Meggen, Tschädigen takes you there within 10 minutes. Get off at the ‘Seeburg’ bus stop, located directly by the entrance of the Sunset bar.

Another alternative (and my favorite!) is to walk from the city to Sunset bar, about 45 minutes total. The walk offers phenomenal views and the lake promenade is very popular for strolls on a nice day. From the city center, simply follow the lake all the way to Sunset bar. There are walking paths directly next to the lake on the entire route, except for where the Lido Luzern beach is located. Here, you just walk around the perimeter of the Lido Luzern area and you find Sunset bar on the other side.

Lastly, you can also take a boat from the Luzern station to the Lido/Verkehrhaus cruise stop (about 10 minutes on the ship) and walk the remaining 5 minutes to the Sunset bar in Luzern.
